Purchased a Frigidaire side-by-side bottom freezer four months ago. Loud gunshot popping sounds when the compressor shuts down. Its been happening since it was new and service tells us its normal. It is really disappointing to hear that a Service tech told you that adding nitrogen would ruin the compressor and he "was not allowed to do it". Never again!! Ugh. I found out that if the ice that accumulates on the evaporator coil is not defrosted it will continue to accumulate as it accumulates and expands it will press on surrounding surfaces and as a result loud popping noises will be produced. And the problem is solved. The crunching noise was the result of ice buildup on the evaporator coil that had not been defrosted properly.
